Today’s Fan Car Friday is brought to us by Jim and his 1960 MG MGA. Fan Car Friday is a segment where we want to share with the world the automobiles that our fans have. We have absolutely no affiliation/relationship with the cars, the build or the owners. This post was made with written consent from the owner.
This MGA is a survivor car. It hasn’t had any major repairs, no paintjobs and no drivetrain swaps. Not only that, the car has no rust and it has the documentation to show it has been well serviced its whole life. It has the original lacquer paint, in Iris blue, though it is now a tad faded. The car has a number of aluminum panels which are known to receive small dents due to its softer nature, and the car has none of these little flaws. So when Jim saw this car, he knew his search was over. Jim is a bit of a perfectionist, and he knows it, which is why he had the patience to search for this car for just under 7 years. When we was searching for his MGA it had to be from 1960, it had to be flawless and it couldn’t be a dark color. The paintjob was the only thing he was willing to sacrifice on. He ideally would have it in a white color, but this one isn’t too bad either.
Jim’s car has disc brakes, an engine with bigger displacement over factory and it runs & drives very smooth. After 60 years of being well cared for, everything has had time to settle in with each other and run in harmony. Which is not only great to have everything run without issue, but it also means Jim has an all original and numbers matching car. The interior is still original. There are no cracks or tears, but it has a moderate level of fading one would expect from exposing the fabric to direct sunlight over the years.
Jim even has the original wheels and tires. Though doesn’t leave them on the car, for safety purposes. The only flaw he could really find in the car is the AM radio. It works fine, but that’s only after Jim allows the tubes to warm up for a few minutes. After that everything is clear as day, and he has yet to not pickup his favorite AM station as he drives to various car shows throughout his state.
Jim isn’t the first owner, but he is a proud 3rd owner, and he is thankful for the way the previous owners treated this beauty. He continues to treat it well getting an oil change every 1,500 miles, never drives it when there’s even a single droplet of water on the ground, he doesn’t leave it in direct sunlight and stores it in a heated garage (Which is also carpeted). Jim drives it mainly to car shows, and this generally means he is on the road with it every week from May to September. A healthy number of miles for “just a show car” as he puts it. Otherwise it sits in his garage and will only travel to drive in movie theaters for dates with his wife.
He says his favorite thing about the vehicle is how anytime he drives the car he has to factor in 15 additional minutes on the trip for everyone who wants to talk to him in the parking lot about his car.
Beautiful little car. It’s survivor status is a great thing for the value. This was a very good era for British lightweights!
