1969 Pontiac Firebird

As seen on Season Three of FantomWorks

 Owner Insight:

Arlene ordered the car shortly after we started dating (Feb. 1969) and took delivery in April or early May 1969.  We took the car on quite a few dates and then on our honeymoon.  The car was shipped to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where we were stationed for eighteen months and then driven cross-country three times to end up on the east coast.  We used the car to bring both of our kids home from the hospital when they were born.  The car was used at duty stations in Rhode Island, Hawaii, Maryland, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and finally Virginia.  Picking up the car on Arlene’s birthday was a great present.  Since getting the car back from you we have taken many top down rides; one with our daughter and three granddaughters.  Our son claims he has “first dibs” on the car when we can no longer use it.  We’ll see!!!!

Finish

The 1969 model received a major facelift with a new front end design but unlike its big brother the GTO, it did not have the Endura bumper. The instrument panel and steering wheel were revised. The ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to the steering column with the introduction of GM’s new locking ignition switch/steering wheel.

Due to engineering problems that delayed the introduction of the all-new 1970 Firebird beyond the usual fall debut, Pontiac continued production of 1969 model Firebirds into the early months of the 1970 model year (the other 1970 Pontiac models had been introduced on September 18, 1969). By late spring of 1969, Pontiac had deleted all model-year references on Firebird literature and promotional materials, anticipating the extended production run of the then-current 1969 models.
