background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The first generation Firebird had characteristic\u00a0Coke bottle styling\u00a0shared with its cousin, the\u00a0Chevrolet Camaro. Unlike the Camaro, the Firebird&#8217;s bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end.\u00a0The Firebird&#8217;s rear &#8220;slit&#8221; taillights were inspired by the 1966\u20131967\u00a0Pontiac GTO. Both a two-door\u00a0hardtop\u00a0and a\u00a0convertible\u00a0were offered through the 1969 model year. Originally, the car was a &#8220;consolation prize&#8221; for Pontiac, which had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original\u00a0Banshee\u00a0concept car. However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet\u00a0Corvette\u00a0sales, and gave Pontiac a piece of the &#8220;pony car&#8221; market through sharing the\u00a0F-body\u00a0platform with\u00a0Chevrolet.<\/p>\n<p>The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the\u00a0Chevrolet 230\u00a0cu\u00a0in (3.8\u00a0L) SOHC inline-six. Fitted with a single-barrel\u00a0carburetor, it was rated at 165\u00a0hp (123\u00a0kW).\u00a0The &#8220;Sprint&#8221; model six came with a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215\u00a0hp (160\u00a0kW).\u00a0Most buyers opted for one of three\u00a0V8s: the 326\u00a0cu\u00a0in (5.3\u00a0L) with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250\u00a0hp (190\u00a0kW); the four-barrel &#8220;HO&#8221; (high output) 326, producing 285\u00a0hp (213\u00a0kW); or the 325\u00a0hp (242\u00a0kW) 400\u00a0cu\u00a0in (6.6\u00a0L) from the GTO. All 1967\u20131968 400\u00a0CI engines had throttle restrictors that blocked the carburetors&#8217; second barrels from fully opening.\u00a0A &#8220;Ram Air&#8221; option was also available, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a hotter\u00a0camshaft. Power for the Ram Air package was the same as the conventional 400\u00a0HO, but peaked at 5,200 RPM.<\/p>\n<p>The 230\u00a0CID engines were subsequently replaced in 1968 by the\u00a0Chevrolet 250\u00a0cu\u00a0in (4.1\u00a0L)\u00a0stroked 230\u00a0CI engines, the first developing an increased 175\u00a0hp (130\u00a0kW) using a single-barrel carburetor, and the other the same 215hp with a four-barrel carburetor. Also for the 1968 model, the 326\u00a0CID engine was replaced by the\u00a0Pontiac 350\u00a0cu\u00a0in (5.7\u00a0L) V8, which actually displaced 355\u00a0cu\u00a0in (5.8\u00a0L), and produced 265\u00a0hp (198\u00a0kW) with a two-barrel carburetor. An HO version of the 350\u00a0CID with a revised cam was also offered starting in that year, which developed 320\u00a0hp (240\u00a0kW). Power output of the other engines was increased marginally.<\/p>\n<p>There was an additional Ram Air IV option for the 400\u00a0CID engines during 1969, complementing the Ram Air III; these generated 345 and 335\u00a0hp (257 and 250\u00a0kW) respectively. The 350\u00a0CID HO engine was revised again with a different cam and cylinder heads resulting in 325\u00a0hp (242\u00a0kW). During 1969 a special 303\u00a0cu\u00a0in (5.0\u00a0L) engine was designed for\u00a0SCCA\u00a0road racing applications that was not available in production cars.<\/p>\n<p>The styling difference from the 1967 to the 1968 model was the addition of\u00a0federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the turn signals were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side. The front door\u00a0vent-windows\u00a0were replaced with a single pane of glass and Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system. The 1969 model received a major\u00a0facelift\u00a0with a new front end design but unlike the GTO, it did not have the Endura bumper. The instrument panel and steering wheel were revised. The ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to the steering column with the introduction of GM&#8217;s new locking ignition switch\/steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>In March 1969, a $725 optional handling package called the &#8220;Trans Am performance and appearance package&#8221;, UPC &#8220;WS4&#8221;, named after the\u00a0Trans Am Series, was introduced. Of these first &#8220;Trans Ams&#8221;, only 689 hardtops and eight convertibles were made.<\/p>\n<p>Due to engineering problems that delayed the introduction of the all-new 1970 Firebird beyond the usual fall debut, Pontiac continued production of 1969 model Firebirds into the early months of the 1970 model year (the other 1970 Pontiac models had been introduced on September 18, 1969). By late spring of 1969, Pontiac had deleted all model-year references on Firebird literature and promotional materials, anticipating the extended production run of the then-current 1969 models.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontiac_Firebird\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontiac_Firebird<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243;][et_pb_sidebar admin_label=&#8221;Sidebar&#8221;
